Sudoku in every color. Play with numbers, letters, shapes or animals, and watch your finished grid become a one-of-a-kind colorful design. 虹 niji means rainbow in Japanese.
To play, click a square on the grid, then a number below it. Keyboard works too: arrows to move, 1 to 9 to fill, N for notes, G to hide or show the grid, Backspace to erase.
Each level has base points: Easy 1,000, Moderate 2,000, Hard 3,500 and Expert 5,000. Killer puzzles earn 1.5 times those points and have longer target times.
Finish faster than the target time (Easy 6 min, Moderate 12, Hard 35, Expert 55; Killer: Easy 12, Moderate 23, Hard 50, Expert 75) to earn a time bonus of up to double the base. The quicker you are, the bigger the bonus.
Each hint costs 10% of the base points, each "Teach me" step 5%, and each digit placed in the wrong square costs 5%, even if you fix it later. Every finished puzzle earns at least 10% of its base.
Start over clears the puzzle back to its starting squares and resets the timer, hints and mistakes. Because you've already seen the puzzle, a restarted game is practice: you still get a score to compare, but it doesn't count toward the leaderboard, personal bests, word records or badges. To play ranked again, pick a level for a new puzzle.

Background music moves to a new tune every few minutes. Turning a sound on plays a short sample. All sounds and music are created by the page itself: nothing extra downloads, and the music is original, so it's free to use.

On sudokuniji you can play like this, but many other ways to play are also available, including with numbers on colors or shades of grey. Instead of numbers; letters, shapes or animal icons with or without colors, or just colors alone can be selected.
Each of these options individually or together, turned on and off can help solve the puzzle. Find them all under Turn digits into.

Games won with your own target times (set under How scoring works) aren't ranked, so the leaderboard stays fair. Games restarted with Start over, and replays of a daily puzzle you've already solved today, are practice. Practice games still show a score but don't count toward rankings, bests, records or badges.
Each level has base points (Killer earns 1.5 times as much). Finishing faster than the target time adds a bonus. Hints, Teach me steps and wrong entries take points off. Open "How scoring works" in the New game panel for the details.
A thin red X marks a number that doesn't match the solution. A red outline alone means a clash: the same number twice in a row, column, box or cage. You can turn the X marks off in the New game panel.
With Letters on, words of 4 or more letters reading forward (across, down or diagonally) count toward your word record and badges. Choose your nine letters before you solve.
Yes. Choose None under On this background for a classic look, or Shapes plus the Colorblind-friendly palette if some colors are hard to tell apart.
